

Digital Black & White Photography with John Gitsham
Learn how to see and capture the world creatively from Macclesfield-based fine art photographer John Gitsham. This 2-day workshop will introduce you to the process of planning, capturing, editing and printing digital fine art black and white photographs. The course (Limited class of 10 students) will be a combination of in the field practical guidance and classroom theory. John has over 50 years experience in photography (20 years as a professional photographer), using film and digital.
Day One
Sat 5th April, 2.00 - 6.00pm
Day One of this workshop, delivered by Macclesfield-based fine art photographer John Gitsham, will offer an overview of John’s workflow from pre-visualisation to final print. You will become familiar with his photographic influences and his portfolio (highlights from his 3 published photographic books) and then get to observe him shoot, import, edit and print an image. Participants are then welcome to share a pub dinner afterwards (for those local or staying overnight).

About John Gitsham
John Gitsham, born 1956, Glenelg, South Australia, is an Art Photographer and
lives in the Adelaide Hills. He has been doing photography for over 50 years: a 1983 Photography Graduate from the SA School of Art, under the tutelage of Ed Douglas, Bill Neve, Peter Jolly, Fiona Hall, Micky Allen, Michael Snelling, and Teemo Pajunen.
John worked as a successful professional photographer from the late 70s until early 1990s. He also taught photography at the O’Halloran Hill Tafe during the 1980’s. He was a founding member of the Art photographers ‘SA Photography Workshop’ along with other contemporary Art photographers like Kate Breakey, Mark Kimber, Michal Kluvanek, Eric Algra etc. John exhibited his work regularly at the ‘Developed Image Gallery’ in Adelaide, SA; and has also exhibited in Sydney and Paris, and has had many other exhibitions in various SA venues over the years. He continues to exhibit his work to this day and is a founding member of a newly establish Adelaide Photo-artist group called PIC (Photographic Images Collective) which started in 2023.
John Gitsham uses a Samsung Mobile Phone, Nikon D500 DSLR, FujifilmX100T, XPro3, Hassleblad 500cm, Linhof Technika, and Chamonix 45N-2 4’x5’ cameras for his Art Photography. His influences and photography mentors are Arthur Tress, Ralph Gibson, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Duane Michals, Keith Carter, Michael Kenna, Robert Mapplethorpe, Brian Griffin, Edward Weston, Minor White, Edward Curtis, and Arnold Newman.

Sam Oster runs Cog Creative Space and has over 20 years’ experience as a working freelance photographer. She runs Silvertrace, servicing arts & entertainment clients (film & TV, dance, theatre & music clients) as well as commercial clients (product, event, schools & corporate photography). She also runs Headshot Laboratory, specialising in actors headshots and corporate headshots, both in the studio and on location. Sam has a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours, Photography Major), as well as a Diploma in Photoimaging and a Certificate IV in WorkplaceTraining & Assessment. She has been teaching for over 20 years’, has taught extensively at the Centre For Creative Photography, The University of South Australia, TAFE SA and Carclew Youth Arts Centre.
