Our on-site darkroom

We have moved the mobile darkroom (The Tintype Traveller) to a position right beside the studio. This will make our traditional analogue photography workshops very comfortable with access to the studio facilities for workshop programs and tea & coffee breaks.

The darkroom is set up with professional fume extraction fans and safe-light vents for fresh air. Power is run directly from the studio, with water accessed via the filtered rainwater from the tank at the back of the studio. We have a large darkroom sink that drains chemicals into the rear storage tank – these chemicals are taken to our friends at Atkins Photo Lab in the city for professional silver reclamation and chemical waste management.

We have 2 enlargers with timers (35mm to 120film), plus all the film processing tanks (35mm to 8×10″), measuring cylinders, funnels, processing trays, tongs and accessories for darkroom work. There is a large print drying rack, and we have 2 film drying cabinets (one air-drying and one heated). We also have a 4×5″ enlarger available on request.

There is a second darkroom across the lower boardwalk and bridge (not pictured here but stay tuned). This darkroom is set up for wet plate collodion work with professional chemical storage and plate varnishing etc. The caravan is regularly used for Tintype shoots and is easily set up for wet plate or film processing and printing.

We are really excited to offer the darkroom  for approved darkroom hire (see the FAQ for eligibility), and can’t wait to run our first darkroom workshops soon!
